The 12–20 mm focal length provides a wide angle of view, and the constant F2.8 aperture delivers good low-light performance. The optical construction consists of 17 elements in 12 groups, including XGM and GM elements, developed to reduce blur, chromatic aberration and sagittal coma. The autofocus is driven by Tamron’s VXD linear motor, and the minimum focusing distance is 0.18 metres at 12 mm and 0.28 metres at 20 mm. The lens has an integrated rear filter holder, a circular 12-blade aperture, weather-sealed construction and a fluorine coating.
