Sony and TCL signed a letter of intent on 20 January to establish a joint company that will take over Sony's operations in TVs and audio products.

The products will bear the Sony and Bravia names, and according to a press release, TCL will own 51 percent of the company, while Sony will hold 49 percent.

The ambition is to finalise binding agreements by the end of March 2026, and the new business is planned to start in April 2027, if the necessary approvals are in place.

According to the announcement, the new company will develop, design, produce, sell, and distribute products globally. Sony contributes its technology in image and sound, as well as a strong brand and operational experience, while TCL adds production capacity, cost efficiency, and a vertically integrated supply chain. The products will continue to bear the Sony and Bravia names.

- We are pleased to enter into this agreement with TCL. By combining the expertise of both companies, we aim to create new customer value and deliver even more engaging experiences, says Kimio Maki, CEO of Sony Corporation, in the press release.

It states that the market for large TV models continues to grow, driven by increased use of streaming services, more advanced smart features, and demand for larger and higher resolution screens. The new company will develop products that meet these trends, while Sony and TCL emphasise that they will support a sustainable growth strategy.
