Electrolux wants to help people wash clothes at lower temperatures. Now the company has put together some tips for maintaining the washing machine.

- More and more people are getting better at washing more sustainably and gently at lower temperatures. However, according to experts at Electrolux, not everyone is as good at ensuring that the washing machine itself is kept clean, according to a press release from Electrolux.

It is pointed out here that one cannot assume that a machine used for washing also keeps itself clean.

- In reality, lint, skin residues, and grease get stuck in the drum and pipes, writes Electrolux.

They also point out that regular cleaning and maintenance will greatly affect the washing machine's performance and have provided five tips.

- Always remember to double-check the manual for the washing machine model you have. There you will find specific instructions on how exactly your machine should be maintained, emphasizes Electrolux.

1. Clean the inside with soap

Clean the inside of the washing machine with soap and water. Regular detergent often contains softening agents that can affect the plastic and make it porous and scratched.

2. Run a maintenance program without clothes

Run an empty machine at 90-95 °C (or the longest program at the highest possible temperature). The high temperature will most likely kill any bacteria and bad odours.

3. Clean the filter and pump wheel

Turn the washing machine completely off and remove the filter. Then clean the filter under running water. If the pump wheel is visible, you can also clean it, but remember to read the instructions for your specific washing machine before doing so.

4. Wipe the exterior with a cloth

Old spills from detergent and lint from clothes can create stains on the outside of the washing machine. Gently wipe the machine's exterior with a damp cloth. If the stains are difficult to remove, you can use a little washing-up liquid or a mild cleaning agent on the cloth. When cleaning edges and corners, you can use a cotton ball. Note! Do not use scouring cream.

5. Cleaning the detergent drawer

Mould and dirt can occasionally form around the detergent drawer, which can emit a bad smell. Clean spills or residues in the drawer by washing it in hot tap water. Use, for example, a toothbrush to remove dirt and dried soap/liquid from the various compartments in the drawer.

– A good rule of thumb is to clean the washing machine 2 to 4 times a year. But to keep performance at its peak and prevent bad odours inside the machine, you can actually make it a routine to clean it once a month. A washing machine starting to smell bad or sour is a typical warning sign that it needs a clean, according to the press release from Electrolux.

According to the supplier, you do not need special products to clean the washing machine.

– With soap, hot water, a cloth, and a toothbrush, you can go a long way. Normally, it is sufficient to run an empty maintenance program. Sometimes it can also be wise to supplement with a cleaning agent, writes Electrolux, pointing out that there are also specially adapted agents for washing machines that effectively clean, descale, and remove grease from the machine.

Electrolux also offers washing advice for daily use.

1. Always empty pockets before washing garments.

2. Avoid overfilling the washing machine with clothes and/or detergent.

3. Leave the door and detergent drawer slightly ajar after each wash.

4. Place small garments and underwear in laundry bags to prevent anything from getting stuck in the drum.
