The four industry associations Stiftelsen Elektronikkbransjen, Applia Norway, TEK Norge and Abelia have entered into an agreement to sell all shares in the producer responsibility company Norsirk AS to Stena Metall AB. Completion of the transaction is subject to approval by the Norwegian Competition Authority.

– To succeed in the circular transition, we must take a holistic view of how resources are managed. The acquisition of Norsirk gives us a better starting point for developing solutions that create value for customers, owners and society, says the chief executive of Stena Metall AB, Kristofer Sundsgård, in a press release.

The mission accomplished

Norsirk was established in 1998, then under the name Elretur, to build up return schemes for electronics.

– At the time, it was a social responsibility to get the return schemes established. Now the associations feel that task has been completed, and that there is a functioning market, says the chief executive of Stiftelsen Elektronikkbransjen, Jan Røsholm, to the trade magazine Elektronikkbransjen.

He points out that the producer responsibility landscape has changed.

– At the same time, several new producer responsibility schemes have been introduced within, among other things, aquaculture, fish and textiles. For industry associations focused on electronics and ICT products, the timing was right to let other players further develop Norsirk’s potential, says Røsholm.

Important milestone

Norsirk will continue to manage producer responsibility on behalf of its customers and members, while collection, processing and recycling are carried out by industrial operators.

– This is an important milestone for Norsirk. Our task remains the same: to provide our customers with safe, efficient and good solutions for producer responsibility, says Norsirk CEO Stig Ervik.

– What does the change of ownership mean in practice for customers?

– We will continue to deliver as before, while also contributing in an orderly manner to the process leading up to the Norwegian Competition Authority’s review, says Ervik.
